UAAC Students File 1,600 Free Tax Returns for the Community
For many, tax season brings stress, confusion and frustration. The endless forms to gather, the fine details to sort through and the looming deadline can be overwhelming, especially for students and low-income individuals who may not have access to professional tax preparation services.
At the Alberta School of Business, the University of Alberta Accounting Club (UAAC) steps up to ease that burden. Every year, UAAC runs its Tax Clinic, a community service initiative that helps individuals file their taxes accurately and at no cost.
This year marked the clinic’s biggest success yet: 1,610 tax returns were filed by a dedicated team of 257 volunteers. It was the largest turnout in the clinic’s history, showing how much the clinic has grown and how many people in the community depend on them.
The clinic is staffed by volunteer accounting students who are trained and supervised by experienced tax professionals. It offers students a valuable opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting, gain real-world experience and build professional skills in accounting and client service.
At the same time, the Tax Clinic serves an important role in supporting students, newcomers, low-income individuals and others who face barriers to accessing paid tax preparation services. It promotes financial literacy and fosters a culture of social responsibility among future business leaders.
With each passing year, the demand for UAAC’s Tax Clinic continues to grow and so does its impact.
